Two weeks short of his third birthday it was time to put to the test the walking and climbing skills of son Oli. He is quite a seasoned walker on the flat. With my big son Tommy carrying the drinks we headed up to the flag, cairn and monument that is about 183m high. The flag can be seen from the garden of Penbryn Mynach. The walk is described in more detail in our “local walks” page under Teaser.
It’s a great walk for any summer holidaymakers as it’s not too long and you do the climbing quite quickly in the shade of the woods. Then you have a fairly gentle descent back into town along a grassy path with super views of Barmouth and Fairbourne.
The detour to the memorial is just as you come out of the woods having exited through a metal gate. Take the right hand path for less than a hundred yards and you get to the cairn, memorial and flag. Head back the same way back to the main walk and the level route to the derelict Gellfechan houses.
Oli talks about his “mountain” walk lots and we will be doing the walk again soon!
